Intense, fast-paced action returns the University of Guam field this weekend with the Heineken Guam Rugby 7s.
In collaboration with the Guam Rugby Football Union, the Heineken Guam Rugby 7s pits local men's and women's teams and teams from the neighboring Northern Mariana Islands together in a two-day tournament for supremacy.
The tournament will include seven men’s and three women’s team, including national team players as well as up and coming athletes out of the popular IIAAG high schools program. Participating Guam clubs include Guam Rugby Club, Para Todu Rugby Club and Southern Rugby Club. Matches are quick and heart-pounding with two seven-minute halves played successively on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
The CNMI men’s team is joining the Heineken Seven’s as part of their preparation for the upcoming Pacific Mini-Games rugby tournament in Vanuatu.
With rugby seven’s now being included and very popular in the Olympic Games, this tournament is a chance for aspiring athletes to stake a claim for inclusion in the Guam Rugby Union’s national sevens programs. This is important with the possibility that Guam will host the 2019 Pacific Games and the opportunity this will give our men and women to play against some of the best teams in the world.
"We are excited that Heineken is again supporting fast paced seven-a-side rugby on Guam," Joshua D. Walsh, Secretary of the Guam Rugby Football Union said.
"With the Governor's recent expression of support for Guam hosting the next Pacific Games, games that will include Rugby sevens, it will be essential that our Guam athletes get as much rugby sevens competition as they can, and this tournament is going to be a great kick off for that preparation. We hope that everyone comes out and enjoys what is sure to be one entertaining weekend of rugby."
Guam Rugby Union President Stephen Grantham expressed his thanks to Heineken for its continuing support and promotion of rugby on Guam and noted that this continues Heineken’s worldwide promotion of rugby. Heineken has recently announced the extension of their 20-year sponsorship of the Rugby World Cup for another four years through to the 2019 event to be held in Japan.
